Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
Let's start a thread about eyeglasses.
Please post tips, stories, links, etc., re: prepping for someone who wears eyeglasses. :36_1_37: |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
www.zennioptical.com great pricing and easy to order
my inlaws have ordered half dozen pairs of glasses and all came in correct...shipping is a bit slow since i think a lot of it comes from hong kong but the glasses are nice..... and i'm in the business. |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
Go to Walmart / Sams / Costco / local drug store....buy as many of those Reading Glasses as you reasonably can in the exact same model/frame but in various increasing diopter perscriptions...as your eyes go to hell....keep stepping up....
The reason for the identical design.....you may have different L/R perscriptions....you can mix and match lenses. These are really low cost glasses - but can be pretty good quality. I'm 43 and just starting to lose my 20/20....need about +1.0 in one eye for reading....I've been lucky to make it this far without glasses....but I notice they are slipping faster now.... Hearing is getting worse....knees hurt a little bit....getting old sucks....thank god my pecker still works fine (I tell Mrs. Ruprick this will be the last component to fail....strictly due to low mileage....). |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
In the thread about best winter headgear, a lot of people recommend balaklavas.
However, I figured it must be impossible to wear those with eyeglasses. Or is it? What's good headgear if someone wears glasses? |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
What about contacts? Seems you could stock up on increasing strengths. Then headgear related issues are moot. Yes, prescriptions are an impediment but only that.
Great thread, btw, as a long-time glasses wearer I have often wondered about this too. My prescription hasn't changed in over a decade but I've been told it will start going nuts again once I hit 40. |

Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
I was thinking about this the other day. I'm 51, and the only one of 7 kids that doesn't wear glasses full time. My far vision is perfect - the kids in my classroom freak out when I tell them to put their answers into their calculators and hold them up, and then I read the answers the kids in the back have from all the way at the front of the room.
But about 5 years ago, I tried reading the date on a dime, and couldn't do it. Our local flea market with the two big Asian vendors still have the cheapo reading glasses at $1 a pop. I only need 1.00 now, but I'm going to stock up on a whole bunch of the stronger ones for later.... |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
there's places that take in old eyeglasses & then give them away or sell them at a low price -

Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
yes, re reading glasses & varying strengths as several have said.
i go to big lots & check for a good shipment/sale of reading; & even sunglasses---something that has become a virtual necessity as my 20/20 is going i got light sensitivity too. i got a few at a dollar store too. these will be very very important. good thread. |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
If you buy an extra pair or just new glasses consider buying safety glasses. The frames are a bit tougher than the normal glasses and the sideshields are detachable. You can get the anti glare coating on them and you cannot tell they are safety glasses by looking at them.
You don't have to buy the huge plastic frame monstrosities. There are plenty of metal framed safety glasses out there and I've had some titanium frames last for years and years. It might not be a bad idea to get a pair of huge plastic safety glasses anyway. Clearing brush, chopping wood, shooting, etc can cause a lot of damage to a irreplacable resource. |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
I keep a spare pair in my truck and another in my BOB. I also keep a copy of the prescription on my person.

Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
I have 2 years of 30 day extended wear contacts and drops. My prescription doesn't change so I'm good to go.
Also have a few bins of various power cheapo readers for later. |
Re: Survival Prep & Eyeglasses
Out of 5 pairs ordered from zennioptical.com 1 pair was so off it gave me major headaches so I tossed them. For the price I can live with those odds. I even ordered 2 more pairs this week since I managed to break the current pair I had been wearing from them for almost a year.

Bedside glasses: herky plastic units with glow in the dark paint on the temples. Don't make the mistake of showing off your latest fashion......
Would looooove tritium inserts surrounded by rhinestones. Horn rim. jk. BTW, stick-on readers are available. Tried 'em and they sucked. Not operator error. However, your experience might differ. Flatter lenses would be ideal. |
